How do geeks spend Valentines day?

It's Valentines!! The season where you will be robbed by all the card companies, flower shops, restaurants, and toy stores! Again, I don't want to rant anymore, I think I've ranted enough in my other blog hahaha!

Since I won't have a date tomorrow, I'm thinking of what I should be doing to keep myself busy without spending any cash (and not think about being alone wahahaha!). I have several options, actually.

Movie/Series Marathon - I still have a lot of movies to catch up to, especially those Chinese Kung Fu flicks I've copied from Choi. I also have several anime series that are untouched.
Gunpla - I have tons of backlog but I really don't have the drive or motivation to start working on one. =/ Eversince I saw the awesome works of friends from the Gunpla group, I kind of lost heart haha.
Minesweeper / Spider Solitaire / Microsoft Hearts - These games are probably the best time-consuming, mind-boggling games I've ever played. Once I start a game, I will not stop until I've won. And yeah, the chances of winning are actually 1 out of 20 haha.
Try Skyrim - Pick up where my boyfriend left off. But this is less likely, I'm too lazy to learn the gameplay or keep up with where his current quest is.
Read a book - I'm currently stuck in Book 4 of the A Song of Fire and Ice series. The recent chapters have bored me to death and I don't even know how I can continue!
Food Trip - I can do it by myself, right? But then again, I might spend here... so scrap that thought.
Facebook Stalk - I can stalk my friends on Facebook and see how they spent their day. But that would make me jealous, so... nevermind.
Sleep - I must not sleep!

Well, if all else fails, I can always play DotA! =D

Last month while I attended a Gundam Model Kit competition, I came across a really cute box in one of the toy stores at the mall where the competition was held. The yellow box immediately caught my attention, and I just had to stop and took quite some time to decide if I should buy it or not. Finally I thought I should just ask for it as a gift in our office Kris Kringle.

At first I kind of regret that I didn't buy that, but after a month, during our Kris Kringle final revelation, I was so happy that my "Daddy" gave me what I've been drooling over for the past couple of weeks! Finally, Pikachu is mine!

What I like about this is that you actually have to assemble the parts for Pika to come to life. Of course I had to use my noob gunpla tools and sand a couple of parts to make Pika look smooth and really clean. Initially, I planned on adding a clear, flat topcoat but it was raining that night and some really good gunpla teachers told me that painting during the rain, cold, and at night would produce bad results. And so I left Pika as is.

I'm really happy with how Pika turned out to be. Cute, yellow, and happy. :) Here are a few pictures:

Gundams: Exia, Enact, Wing Zero

I haven't posted in a while, and I think I kind of forgot to post this. Last month I attempted to have a photoshoot with a few of my Gundams and I must admit, I really am a newbie. I think I took around 300+ shots, but the good ones are only down to around 20. Haha, such a waste of space! Anyway, here are some shots that I felt passed my standards. I did some post-processing using Adobe Photoshop CS4 Portable version.

EXIA: The Emo Gundam manned by the super EMO pilot, Setsuna F. Seiei.
I did some painting on this 1/60 No Grade baby, and it has been a while since I finished this so it has really become a dustbin. This is my second paint job, and I must say I made A LOT of errors still. I did learn something along the way, and maybe my next build will be much better.

AEU Enact Ali Al-Saachez Custom

This is actually Marc's kit. He snap-built it a few months back, and I now just had the time to have its photos taken. I love its slim, sexy built that almost has the same feel as the Eva's (Evangelions).

Hold your head up high, inhale some courage, and start the show.

This is one of my favorite shots, if only the nubmarks didn't show haha! This kit is also Marc's, I gave it to him as a present last year for his birthday. Gundam Wing is the only series he knows (Now, I convinced him to watch Seed/Seed Destiny and 00 hehe), and he already has a Deathscythe kit so I thought this is the next best thing. Snap built, no modifications and no panel lines.

GN-004 Gundam Nadleeh (aka Gundam Nadleeh, Nadleeh), is the hidden form of GN-005 Gundam Virtue in seasons 1 of Mobile Suit Gundam 00; was later succeeded by GN-009 Seraphim Gundam. The unit is piloted by Tieria Erde.

Behind the masculine bulk of Gundam Virtue, it hides the slender feminine form of Gundam Nadleeh within. To activate Nadleeh, Tieria must utilize his quantum brainwaves to interface with his cockpit to discard Virtue's armor. Designed to serve as Tieria's "trump card," Nadleeh is capable of using Virtue's shoulder cannons as hand-held guns; it's regular complements, GN Shield and GN Beam Rifle (derived from Gundam Plutone) are stored inside Ptolemy in case of emergencies.

In regular combat, Nadleeh is a high speed melee combat unit; it's unclear if Nadleeh comparable to Exia. When Nadleeh is unleashed in battle from Virtue, Nadleeh would reach for its cannons to clear the battlefield with heavy beam firing. When launched just-as in battle, Nadleeh can use fire-and-shield tactics with its shield and beam rifle. For melee combat, the unit has a pair of beam sabers for close range combat. I bought another 1/144 model kit to complete my Gundam 00 units. It should have been Gundam virtue, but I really didn't like the fat Gundam, so I opted for the slimmer, sexier other self instead.

I really need a new camera. One that focuses really well, and one that enhances the color. Tskk.... Too bad I'm still broke. *Sigh*

Gundams: Strike Noir & Exia

Marc and I bought Gundams last weekend, one fake and one original hehe.

Strike Noir (1/144)
Manufacturer: HONG LI
Price: 250

Exia Repair II (1/144)
Manufacturer: Bandai
Price: 680

The finished products are surprisingly almost similar. And the Hong Li brand is almost as good as the original Bandai. Here are some difference:

Colors. Those from Ban Dai have really bright, crisp colors . Hong Li, on the other hand, had faded versions of those colors.
Joints. The Ban Dai toys have more accurate "snaps" especially with the joints. The Hong Li version can be a bit difficult at times -- either too loose or too tight.
Price. Hongli is waaay cheaper. And it comes with a stand, too!

Overall, Marc is satisfied with the Hongli brand considering its price. Strike Noir vs. Exia, who'd win?

Open the WinRar application
Select Help > About
Click on the picture of the books
See them become animated!

It doesn't stop there, no not yet. Here's what to do next:

After books fall to bottom, hold down the [CTRL] key
Click the ocean scene on the Logo (found on top)
See the ocean become animated!

And finally: If you hold down [ALT] key and click the logo, a sail boat on the horizon appears!

GN-006 Gundam Cherudim (Pink Custom)

GN-006 Cherudim is my favorite Gundam out of all the Gundam 00 (2nd Season) mobile suits. Why? Because of the shield bits. I think it rocks. :)

So. Since I've been looking forward to modifying and customizing a Gundam ever since my first ever Gundam toy, I decided to transform my Cherudim into something girly. I don't mean any offense to other hardcore Cherudim or Gundam fans out there by re-painting my toy pink. Most people might think what I did is actually blasphemous LOL. But anyway, I wanted this Cherudim to be MY Cherudim. And so, here's my baby:

Here are some of the details of this Gundam:

GN-006 Cherudim
1/100 Scale
Pilot: Lockon Stratos

- Acrylic Paints used:

Metallic Pink (which turned out violet!) -- instead of the original Green
Silver -- instead of the original Black

I made a few mistakes on my first attempts, but I was able to get the hang of it in the end. =) Of course, there were casualties:

3 fingers got hurt during the process
1 asthma attack (due to the paint)
damaged furniture (again, because of the paint)

But, oh well. I really enjoyed working on this project and I can't wait to work on the next one!

Geek Tips: Notepad Trick

This is one of the tricks I learned from Dai-B. It's actually a very good trick if you want to annoy yourself. Here's how:

1. Open Notepad

2. On your notepad file, type in this code:

@echo off
:Begin
msg * (Type your message here)
msg * (and here)
GOTO Begin

3. Save as .BAT

To do this, click File > Save As.
Then select ALL FILES on the Save as File Type textbox.
Input the filename with the .BAT extension
Example: Test.bat

4. Open the file.

Yes I know this is one annoying trick. You have to restart your PC to get rid of the pop up message. LOL.

Personally, I find it awkward hearing Alanis with all those sound manipulations and technical modifications (or whatever you call that). I think she should just stick to her normal, angst-ful style of singing because the addition of techno in her sound is a bit too.. awkward. I guess you should hear it for yourself!

Did you know, Google has created versions of its search engine for Windows, Linux, and BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution)? If you don't know what those three are, they are called your Operating Systems or OS, the main brain of your computer. Well anyway, for more information on the what the OS is, you may visit the OS Wiki.

The Google - Windows version is characterized by the Google sign on the Windows default wallpaper, Bliss. The Linux version injects the iconic penguin in the logo. Finally, the BSD version shows the devil icon of the OS on the logo.

There used to be a Mac version, but for some reason, it isn't there anymore. For now, if you look at the page, it just displays the accessories you can get for your Mac.

Cloud Strife is the main protagonist of the popular RPG series, Final Fantasy 7. His appearance is marked by spikey blonde hair, vivid blue eyes, dark clothing, and his famous Buster Sword. He is also this week's Gee-Cube's Video Game Hunk of the Week.

Cloud is basically a mercenary. He used to belong to a group called SOLDIER, a select, genetically augmented military unit operating under the defacto world government and megacorporation Shinra Electric Power Company. However, he discovers something and fights agains Shinra in the resistance group AVALANCHE, where he meets the primary antagonist, Sephiroth.

Sorry for the delay, folks. I'm three days late in posting the Video Game Hunk of the Week! So now without further adieu, the week's VGHotW is the ultra-hot and sexy fighter from the famous video game, Tekken -- HWOARANG.

Hwoarang is first introduced in Tekken 3 as a Korean fighting character whose expertise is Tae Kwon Do. He used to gamble in street fighting. His fellow gang members would lose matches, then Hwoarang would step in and win. In one of those fights, he faced Jin Kazama and the match ended in a draw. Because of this, Hwoarang decided to train harder so that he'd never lose again.

Unfortunately, when he visited the dojang, he was frustrated when he found out that it had been destroyed by the Ogre. This drove him to enter The King of Iron Fist Tournament 3 to get revenge for the death of his master and to fight a conclusive battle with Jin.

Here are some facts about Hwoarang:

Hwoarang finally defeats Jin in Tekken 6, but is defeated by Jin's "devil form."
His famous moves are his Left and Right Flamingo stances

Did you know that you can actually create a log file using Windows Notepad without having to do coding, scripting, or all that programming thingamagigs software developers do? Here's how:

1. Open Notepad
2. Type .LOG on the first line, and then press [Enter] to move to the next line
3. Save your file on a directory you can easily navigate to.

The next time you open the file, you will notice that the current date and time have been appended to the end of the text you entered.

Geek Trivia: Hidden Text Generator

Our favorite document editor, MicroSoft Word, has a hidden function! This is called the RAND function, oftentimes called an Easter Egg, and sometimes feared as a virus. It is actually a Word function that's undocumented in the online Help, but documented in the MS Knowledge Base.

According to the article, this function:

Microsoft Word allows you to quickly insert sample text into a document. To do this, type =rand() in the document where you want the text to appear, and then press ENTER.

The inserted text is that hardy perennial: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog,” which contains every letter in the English alphabet.

The first number is the number of paragraphs, and the second the number of sentences per paragraph.

Here's how to do it:

Open a new document file
Type =rand (X,Y) where X and Y are random numbers
Press Enter

Did you know that you cannot create a blank folder in Windows?

If you rename it to [BLANK] (that is, delete the Folder Name), Windows will automatically rename it back to the Folder Name.

Even if you rename it to (' ') SPACE, Windows will still rename it back to its Folder Name.

But! Here's a technique I'll share with you on how to rename your folder to blank:

Highlight the folder you want to rename
Press F2, or Right-click > Rename
Hold [ALT]
Press the number keys: [2] [5] [5]

And you'll get a blank to use for your folder!
An alternative for this is also using [ALT] + 0160.

Why is that? Well, learn your Ascii, my friend!

Open Windows Pinball
Type bmax
Launch the ball.

No matter how many times you drop the ball, it will just come up again. That eliminates your problem of constantly falling off.

Control your Pinball:

Open Windows Pinball
Type hidden test
Launch the ball.

Click and hold on the ball. Notice that wherever you steer your mouse to, the ball goes with it. Now you can control the ball and hit wherever you like!

Geek News: World Of Warcraft Movie?

There's a lot of buzz currently among the WoW community because of the upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular PC game, World Of Warcraft.

Currently the movie is still in production but is scheduled to go live in 2009. The production company that will work on World of Warcraft the Movie is Legendary Pictures (Superman Returns, Batman Begins, 300). At the moment, the cast and crew have not been identified yet. The budget for the film will be at US$ 100 million and will be focused on what the essence of Warcraft is: Humans vs. Orcs.

Wow, I'm actually looking forward to this! Although I haven't really played the game, I have some pretty good idea about what Warcraft is all about (I played Warcraft I, II, and III, and I'm currently addicted to W3: Defence of the Ancients). Hopefully we'll get to see some kickass badass Warcraft film in 2009. :)

The hottest guy in the Final Fantasy 7 (FF7) series is SEPHIROTH. Please, don't contradict me on this. You know I'm telling the truth. *wink*

Sephiroth (セフィロス) is the recurring villain in Square/Square Enix's popular RPG series, Final Fantasy VII. He is characterized as a tall man with long silver hair (and dreamy sparkling eyes). Here are some basic information about him:

Playing Windows Solitaire has always been one of my past-time-games, especially when I have nothing to do, and I have my laptop with me, and I don't feel like playing other complicated games. I just hate it when I couldn't win the 3-card Mode. Hahaha. Well, for all ya cheaters out there, here are some Solitaire tricks to dominate the game:

To turn one card at a time in a 3-cards over mode, hold down: [CTRL] + [ALT] + [SHIFT], and click the card.

To instantly win the game, simply press [ALT] + [SHIFT] + 2.

In addition to the Windows hotkeys from my previous post, there are more Windows secrets than we already know. Let me share some of them with you. (Sorry Linux users, I'm a total noob when it comes to your OS so I'll just make use of what I have =P)

Did you know, you can't create a folder named con anywhere in Windows? I don't know why, but I think it's supposed to be a command to the system. Weird. [Info given by Marc]

If you're too tired of right clicking your files to see its properties, one alternative is to press [ALT] + [ENTER] on the selected item.

Did you know that you can also rename multiple files at once? Select them all, right click and select Rename. Enter the desired name. They will be renamed using what you specified, with a number in parentheses to distinguish them.

To restore your minimized windows (through [Windows Key] + [M]), you can press: [Windows Key] + [Shift] + [M].

Did you know that you can invert your screen instantly (For Windows XP only)? Simply click the following:
[CTRL] + [ALT] + [Down Arrow]: to invert the screen
[CTRL] + [ALT] + [Up Arrow]: to undo the inversion

Geek Trivia: Notepad Bug

Did you know? Windows Notepad (our favorite Windows text editor) has a bug! If you enter a proper series of letters and words, you will get a weird (and I mean weird) result. The result I got was a series of Chinese characters. I'm not sure if yours will differ. Anyway, here's how to do it:

1. Open Windows Notepad
2. Type pats has the power (in small letters)
3. Save the document, and close Windows Notepad
4. Open the saved file (I saved mine as test.txt)

Hehehe cool, ain't it?

Well the reason behind that, says JOECOOL (vulcanlogic7@yahoo.com), is that:

In notepad, any other 4-3-3-5 letter word combo will have the same results.
It is all to do with a limitation in Windows. Text files containing Unicode UTF-16-encoded Unicode are supposed to start with a "Byte-Order Mark" (BOM), which is a two-byte flag that tells a reader how the following UTF-16 data is encoded.

Sorry but I'm not an ultra-techie person and I absolutely don't know what that meant, so if anyone can care to explain that in layman's term, that would be great!

Last Tuesday, Google's ultimate march for Web domination just took another step further with the launch of its first Internet browser -- Google Chrome. They claim that the new browser is better, faster, and stronger than the Microsoft's incredibly popular and most widely used Internet Explorer.

According to their blog,

We owe a great debt to many open source projects, and we're committed to continuing on their path. We've used components from Apple's WebKit and Mozilla's Firefox, among others -- and in that spirit, we are making all of our code open source as well. We hope to collaborate with the entire community to help drive the web forward.

Isn't that sooo cool? Google is my favorite search engine/email host/past-time activity. Firefox is my favorite web browser. Combining them is just a dream come true! The only downside: only users with Windows Vista or XP can download and install Chrome. Oh well, so much for open-source (Linux/Mac-OS) users.

Although the browser is still on its Beta stage, a lot of users are surely expecting a whole lot more from Google. I just downloaded a copy, and I have yet to try it on my PC.

Geek Gadget: USB Humping Dogs

USB thumb drives are the "in" thing nowadays. No need to worry about bringing a bulky CD or even the obsolete diskette, God forbid. All you need is a handy-dandy thumb drive (or sometimes called flash drives) that come in 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB memory. Just connect it to any computer through the USB port and you're good to transfer, copy, delete, or create new files.

Through the years, USB drives have evolved. But apparently, it was two years ago when the Japanese introduced the dog that f*cked your computer. Introducing: the USB Humping dog.
The USB Humping dog is from Japanese company Cube-works and here's a literal translation of the description of their product from Google Translate:

But what we don't realize is that Google can give us crazy, freaky, and funny results at the same time! Here are some examples:

If you type "answer to life the universe and everything" on the textbox and click Google Search, the first result that Google will display is Google's calculator with the number 42 as the answer. This is in reference to Douglas Adam's "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," in which it is discovered the answer to life the universe and everything is 42.

If you type "french military victories" on the textbox and click I'm Feeling Lucky, you will be informed by Google that "No standard web pages containing all your search terms were found." Instead, it will ask you if you meant French Military Defeats. LOL!

If you type "ELGOOG" (google spelled backwards) on the textbox and click I'm Feeling Lucky, Google will redirect you to a Google page where everything else is also spelled backwards!

He is the main protagonist of the first and third installments in Capcom's Onimusha video game series (Onimusha: Warlords and Onimusha 3: Demon Siege).
His face is modeled after Japanese/Taiwanese Actor, Takeshi Kaneshiro

A samurai and master swordsman in service to the Saito clan of Mino province who travels across Japan seeking his rival

There's an Onimusha live action movie that's currently in production but as of now, there isn't any certainty as to when it will be released. The last time I heard, it was delayed. Well, hopefully they get a good actor to play this guy.

Games Galore: Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li

I was browsing Google for Street Fighter pictures yesterday because I needed to make a photo manipulation of some of its characters when I stumbled across this picture:

My first reaction was: Holy %#$& is that Kristin Kreuk? And why is her picture placed side by side with Chun-Li?

So my curiosity led me to go back to Google's main page and search with the following parameters: "Kristin Kreuk Chun Li." Boy was I surprised. Not only did I find out that the Smallville princess will be playing Chun-Li's character, but that there is also an upcoming Street Fighter movie to be released in 2009! Wow!

The movie, which just recently kicked off, is said to be in production, according to the Internet movie database and set to be released sometime in February 2009. The movie's story will focus on the Street Fighter female character, Chun-li, and her quest for justice. Nothing has been said yet about the story, and there aren't any official photos yet. So boys, you'll just have to wait for Kristin to be in the classic Chun Li get up. The movie will be directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak of Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, and Doom.

Games Galore: Got Milk?

I came across this article and found a very interesting developed by the Japanese for the Nintendo DS. What's it about? It's a squirting game. The player must squirt white, sticky liquid to a target. Uh-oh. Relax, it's just milk.

The new game, called To LOVEru, follows the adventures of a boy and an alien girl. The objective of the game is simple. The player must squirt condensed milk on a strawberry that the alien girl is holding. NOTE: squirt ON THE STRAWBERRY, and not elsewhere.

For the not-so-enthusiastic-mouse-users, Microsoft Windows has hotkeys and shortcuts that would make your life easier! To save yourself the time and energy of moving your hand from the keyboard to the mouse pad, here are some hot keys for Windows XP or Vista users:

Press [Windows key] + D: To Show Desktop
Press [Windows key] + E: To open Windows Explorer
Press [Windows key] + R: To open the Run window
Press [Windows key] + M: Minimize all windows
Press [Windows key] + L: Lock Computer
Press [Windows key] + F: Open Search Explorer
[Alt] + [Tab]: Coolswitch - Switch to the next window to the right
[Shift] + [Alt] + [Tab]: Coolswitch - Switch to the next window to the left

When browsing or when viewing documents, other hot keys can also be used as an alternative to the Page Up and Page Down buttons. Not entirely a shortcut, but in case your keyboard messes up:

[Shift] + [Space] = Page Up
[Space] = Page Down

As I've said before, Mozilla Firefox (FF) is my favorite browser, and it's one heck of a browser too. It's convenient, and it satisfies my urge of visiting a ton of sites at a time. Throughout the years, I've discovered a lot of techniques, and I call it "Power Browsing."

CTRL + Click on LINK = open in new tab
CTRL + mouse scroll up = decrease text size
CTRL + mouse scroll down = increase text size
CTRL + Page UP = Move to right tab
CTRL + Page down = Move to left tab
CTRL + [number] = Move to the [number] tab

This Power Browsing technique will definitely take you to another level of internet exploration.

Geek Tips: Browsing Made Easier

I must admit, one of a geek's habits is browsing the Internet for... STUFF. That is, anything under the sun, or whatever the idea/passion/curiosity junk of the moment is. Sometimes I open more than 10 tabs using my Mozilla Firefox browser and shift between these tabs while the other pages are still loading to maximize the information being gathered at a time.

Because of this, I've learned a few tricks to speed up my browsing experience by using shortcuts and hot keys:

F6: Go to address bar of your browser
F5: Refresh
F3: Open the "FIND" function

Sometimes it's also cumbersome typing the URLs (Uniform Resource Locator) because you have to type dot-coms or triple w's just to load the page. Well, here are also a few short cuts:

If you type GOOGLE in your address bar, and click [Shift] and [Enter] simultaneously, the browser will automatically add the "WWW" before and ".NET" after the word GOOGLE.

If you type GOOGLE in your address bar, and click [CTRL] and [Enter] simultaneously, the browser will automatically add the "WWW" before and ".COM" after the word GOOGLE.

If you type GOOGLE in your address bar, and click [CTRL], [Shift] and [Enter] simultaneously, the browser will automatically add the "WWW" before and ".ORG" after the word GOOGLE.

Also it would be great if you use Mozilla Firefox (I'm a FF fan ^___^), because it's easy, fast, efficient, and very convenient to use.
